Understanding TOEFL Scores

The scoring pattern of TOEFL is different from other English proficiency tests like PTE and IELTS. While all three English language proficiency tests examine your understanding of the foreign language, each test has a different test pattern and duration. TOEFL score is measured on a 0–120 scale, i.e. 0–30 TOEFL scores for each section.

Although the score range for each of the four test sections (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing) is from 0 to 30, each section has a separate measure and each measure has its own scale. Here, you can understand how to calculate TOEFL scores for each section of the exam.

How to Calculate TOEFL Scores for the Reading Section?

The reading section has multiple-choice items. The Reading section has 20 questions based on reading passages from academic texts and answering questions. You will receive one point for each correct response except for the last question of each set, which is worth two points. The total TOEFL scores for the reading section are then converted to a score on a scale of 0–30.

How to Calculate TOEFL Scores for the Listening Section?

The Listening section has 29 questions based on listening to lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations. Candidates are allotted one point for each correct answer. Some questions are even worth 2 points. The total points that you receive are converted to a 0–30 scale.

Speaking skills are scored with a SpeechRater program - an automated scoring system for the TOEFL speaking test. The SpeechRater program uses all 4 tasks' responses to determine your overall speaking abilities, which are then converted to TOEFL scores on a scale of 0–30.

How to Calculate TOEFL Scores for the Writing Section?

While the two writing tasks are scored by e-rater automatic scoring technology. The score range for the writing skill is from 1 (low) to 5 (high), your writing task rating is summed and converted to a score on a scale of 0–30. Candidates might even get 0 for wrong answers.

How to Check Your TOEFL Result?

The best part of the TOEFL test is the ability to view your scores online, apart from which you will receive an email informing you that your TOEFL scores are available. You can log in to your ETS account and check your TOEFL result, you are likely to receive the TOEFL scores after 4-8 days of taking the test. If you want you can also download and print the PDF copy of your TOEFL scores. If you want to receive the TOEFL scores in the print version, they will be mailed after thirteen days of your test date.

How to Send TOEFL Scores to Universities?

Online- The choice of selecting the universities to send your TOEFL scores is available right after the registration to the date before the TOEFL exam dates. If you are thinking about "how much does it cost to send TOEFL scores to universities?" then the cost of sending the scores to the university is free for up to 4 universities. This fee is included in your TOEFL registration fee itself. You can register 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You must make sure that the name you use when you register exactly matches the identification you will carry on the test day.

Let us understand how to register for the TOEFL test online.

Step 1: Visit the ETS website, and click on TOEFL.

Step 2: The next page guides you to the TOEFL test, click ‘Register Now’.

Step 3: If you are a new user, click ‘Sign up’.

Step 4: Create your profile by filling in all the required information.

Step 5: Create your username and password by following the rules.

Step 6: Once you fill in all the information, you will see a confirmation page that will display all the information you submitted earlier.

Step 7: Once your profile is created, log in with your username and password and click ‘GO’. Now you can access your home page, which displays your profile.

Step 8: Under My Tests, click ‘Register for a Test/ Order score reports’.

Step 9: Click ‘TOEFL Test’ and Continue

Step 10: Read the entire page carefully before clicking ‘I Agree’.

Step 11: Now select a TOEFL test center and test date.

Step 12: Once, you have your desired test center and test date, confirm your registration.

Step 13: On the next page, you can choose up to four institutions of your choice to send your TOEFL scores.

You must make sure you provide correct details, before moving ahead. The page will ask you to enter the recipient’s name, you can add or delete TOEFL scores recipient’s name from the page. Once you fill in the recipient’s name, you can then choose how you wish to receive the TOEFL scores.

You can choose whether you wish to receive the TOEFL scores through the internet or both internet and printed copies mailed to your address.

Step 14: The last step is to make the payment for TOEFL test registration. Make sure you check certain details like the test center, date, and timing among others. If you want to make any changes, click ‘Modify’, you can then carry out the changes. Or if you change your mind and do not wish to take the test, you can simply click ‘Cancel’. However, if you wish to take the test, click ‘Confirm’. Then you can make the payment by selecting the payment method and filling in the necessary information. Once the payment is successful, you will see a page confirming your registration for the TOEFL test.

Reviewing Your TOEFL Scores

ETS gives an option to review your TOEFL scores after the results are out. This option is available for those applicants who are not satisfied with their scores and wish to review their scores. These test scores can only be reviewed for the writing and or speaking section. Apart from this, a TOEFL score review is possible only up to 30 days after you take the test.

Here are some important points that you must consider before requesting for TOEFL score review:

• The scores can be reviewed only once.
• If you want both writing and speaking sections reviewed, they must be done at the same time.
• If there are any changes in your TOEFL scores (lower or higher) after review, the revised scores will become your final scores.
• Your scores cannot be reviewed if you have already requested that they be sent to an institution or agency.
• To review- each section costs USD 80 which is approximately INR 7,000, which means both sections together cost USD 160 which is approximately, INR 13,900.
• Scores are reported online about 3 weeks after your request is received.

How to Send TOEFL Scores to Universities Via Additional Score Reports?

Your scores are valid for 2 years after your test date. As the score reports are automatically shared after receiving your results, there are additional score reports, that can be purchased through which you can share your TOEFL score reports with more universities, i.e. more than four universities. The cost for these additional score reports is USD 25 which is approximately, INR 2,160 for each university. These can be ordered through the ETS account itself.
